Abstract
The primary foci of this chapter are the special needs of obese clients who are being considered for exercise testing and training and the associated concerns and precautions. Awareness on the part of exercise leaders and clinicians (referred to herein as exercise therapists) is an important step to the development and vending of safe, yet effective exercise training programs that are prudent and within current established standards of practice in the U.S. A concerted effort has been made to present this material, such that problems are both identified and practical solutions suggested. To this end, the most common problems encountered while working with obese persons in exercise settings are mentioned with the hope that exercise therapists will be more conscious and can circumvent some potentially troublesome areas which could lead to injury and possibly malpractice or liability litigation.
