Abstract
Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) are the best known and most widely used nutrition standards in the United States. They are estabHshed by the Food and Nutrition Board (FNB) of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council (NAS/NRC) as guidelines for assessing the adequacy of intakes of essential nutrients. Such standards are needed for evaluating the nutritional adequacy of diets both for maintenance of health and for treatment of disease. They are needed as guides for recommendations for modification of the diets of persons who may be at risk of nutritional inadequacy owing to inappropriate food selection. They serve as the basis for recommendations for modification of the national food supply when some type of nutritional inadequacy is identified as a public health problem.
