Abstract

This chapter is not intended to serve as a comprehensive guide to the medical treatment of drug overdoses. Comprehensive treatment requires a knowledge of general life support, and the specific treatment of various overdoses which includes knowledge of how to remove the poison, how to inactivate the poison, and finally what specific antidotes are available. For in depth reading on this topic, the authors recommend Clinical Toxicology of Commerical Products by Gosselin, et al. The presentation in this chapter will attempt to provide the physician with a basis for using the physical and psychological evaluation to make a reasonable assessment as to the type of drug intoxication or withdrawal that the patient is experiencing. The treatment approach will emphasize the management of the behavioral manifestations of toxicity with only a general outline of medical treatment.
