Abstract

Alcohol abuse is a common and significant problem that is seen in the emergency room as either alcohol intoxication or alcohol withdrawal. Since intoxication and withdrawal can present as a medical and/or a behavioral emergency, treatment usually requires collaboration between the psychiatrist and the internist.
