Abstract
“Mental retardation refers to subnormal general intellectual functioning which originates during the developmental period and is associated with impairment of either learning in social adjustment or maturation or both” (DSM II, 1968). The diagnosis of mental retardation depends partly on impaired intellectual ability but it should also involve a clinical judgment of the patient’s adaptive behavioral capacity, motor skills, and social and emotional maturity.
