Biosynthesis of collagen cross-links: Relationship of heritable disorders

  • Chapter
Inborn Errors of Skin, Hair and Connective Tissue

Abstract

In a previous paper Dr Grant (1973) described the biosynthesis of the collagen molecule. The object of this paper is to discuss what happens extracellularly subsequent to the biosynthesis of the collagen molecule; in other words, what holds the molecule together to maintain the integrity of the fibre and, at the same time, gives the collagen fibre its high tensile strength. It is this high tensile strength of the fibre that permits collagen to act as the major mechanical supporting component of the body. Indeed, the role of collagen in the body is almost, but not entirely, mechanical (Harkness, 1961).
