Abstract

Modern agriculture has become increasingly reliant on the use of antibiotics routinely to maintain good animal performance in intensive rearing systems. The subsequent decline in efficiency and occurrence of disease associated with drug resistance (Smith, 1960) caused a re-evaluation of their use, and the eventual adoption of the recommendations of the Swann Committee Report (1969) was viewed with considerable alarm being estimated to have a potential cost to British Agriculture of approximately Σ30 million per annum. The prospect of equating antibodies rather than antibiotics with animal health is a serious goal for all conservationists and the now universal concern to restrict the use of antibiotics for the more serious health problems makes immunoprophylaxis of animal diseases an urgent objective.
