Abstract

Developments in laboratory medicine and technology in recent years have greatly increased the demands for high quality animal antisera. The widespread use of antisera in immunochemical procedures and other techniques results from several unique properties possessed by these molecules. Firstly, they have the ability to detect single substances, ranging from high molecular weight proteins to low molecular weight drugs, in complex mixtures of closely related substances. Secondly, reactions involving antibodies are quantitative in nature and thirdly, these reactions may be made extremely sensitive and precise by the application of the appropriate methodology. However, the specificity, sensitivity and precision of immunochemical assays depend to a large extent on the intrinsic characteristics of the antibodies used.
