Alphafetoprotein in oncology

Abstract

Alphafetoprotein (AFP), along with Bence Jones protein, ßHCG and possibly thyrocalcitonin, is one of the few tumour related antigens that can be used successfully both in diagnosis and monitoring of neoplasia. The specificity of AFP as a tumour marker, particularly with respect to the germ cell tumours, is quite impressive. Although AFP can be used with considerable benefit as a diagnostic marker, its real value lies in the management of disease and in prognosis.
