Abstract

The origin and evolution of the solar system is ranked first in the National Academy of Sciences current listing of the central scientific problems of our time. A detailed knowledge of the structure and composition of the moon would be of inestimable value in resolving this age-old problem. The question has become susceptible to scientific analysis on the basis of quantitative physical data only within the past decade, although the lunar sciences are still necessarily permeated by sheer speculation to a large degree.
