Abstract
Up to this point, the models that we have discussed have been largely inadequate for the purpose of dissecting out the foundations of ecosystem organization. While suitably constructed single-species population growth models can be excellent predictors of population dynamics, as well as mathematically convenient, it is a matter of debate how adequate such models are as devices for fostering our theoretical understanding of ecological phenomena.
