The Helen Iron Deposit — Canada

  • Chapter
Atlas of Economic Mineral Deposits

Abstract

Iron deposits in the Michipicoten area, of which this is the best known, were (largely because of their proximity to Lake Superior) the first to be developed in Canada. Although subsequently overshadowed by others, the Helen Mine remains in production. It is the best example of the so-called ‘Algoma’ type of iron deposit, found in various parts of the world, usually, like this one, in association with the acid volcanic rock sequences of the so-called Archean greenstone belts.
