One- and Two-Tailed Tests

In all the examples we have been asked to ‘test the hypothesis that σ = σ0’ and to do this we have tested using the x2 distribution whether or not σ is significantly greater than OR significantly less than σ0, i.e. we have carried out a TWO-TAILED TEST. In fact we have tested the null hypothesis that σ= σ0 against the hypothesis that σ≠ σ0.
