Abstract

Semiconductor devices have been employed in electrical and electronic engineering for a long time. The best example is probably graphite which is used for both brushes and microphones. The semiconductor revolution is, however, of more recent origin; it started in the immediate post-war years with great leaps forward in technology. First came the production of pure material, then controlled doping, then p-n junction and finally, the crowning success, the transistor. Other semiconductor devices have followed in due course but so far none have outshone the transistor.
