Abstract

Transferrin (Tr) is a major serum protein with a MW of 90000 and a serum concentration of 200–320 mg/100 ml (about 4 per cent of the total serum proteins). Each molecule of Tr can bind two atoms of trivalent iron (Fe3+). Normally only 30 per cent of the total iron binding capacity of the Tr is saturated.
