α-Albumin in cerebrospinal fluid of patients with multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases — comparison with other brain specific proteins

  • Chapter
Immunological and Clinical Aspects of Multiple Sclerosis

Abstract

α-Albumin (an astrocyte specific protein) was determined in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 142 patients without CNS disease, 79 multiple sclerosis patients and 1060 patients with other neurological diseases. In control and other neurological diseases, the CSF α-albumin (GFA) level was comparable with that of other brain specific proteins. However in MS, CSF α-albumin was within the normal range even during exacerbations, contrasting with the CSF levels of MBP and S100, which were correlated with the disease activity. This difference could be of diagnostic value if confirmed in further studies.
