Abstract
With certain viral infections, myalgias may be prominent. The muscle pain and tenderness tend to involve the lower extremities (especially the calves) and are generally short-lived. Infections with enterovirus (coxsackie, poliovirus, and echovirus) and influenza virus (Ruff and Secrist, 1982) are most commonly associated with this syndrome. In one variety (Bronholm disease) there is selective involvement of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, and pleurodynia is prominent. Coxsackie type B is the culprit in most cases.
