Abstract
Stephen and Koenig (1970) maintained that while many hypotheses have been formulated concerning the etiology and maintenance of nailbiting, systematic treatment of this habit has rarely been investigated. They regarded nailbiting not only as a significant problem for many young adults, but as a behavior that is conducive to investigation, since it can be “reliably observed and measured” (p. 211).
