Abstract

Nailbiting was one of the developmental problems discussed in a monograph by Macfarlane, Allen, and Honzik(1954). This report was based on the data obtained in the longitudinal Berkeley Guidance Study, a landmark in the investigation of developmental problems of normal children from the age of 21 months to 14 years. Clarizio and . McCoy (1976) summarized several developmental patterns that were revealed by the Macfarlane et al. (1954) study: The problems, which declined with age, were (1) elimination controls (enuresis and soiling), (2) fears, (3) thumb-sucking, (4) destructiveness, and (5) temper outbursts. Only one problem, nailbiting, increased with age, although this too was beginning to drop off by age 14: [pp. 5; 7]
