Abstract

Despite impressive achievements in the rehabilitation of spinal cord injured subjects, the following important areas of research have not been adequately investigated: (1) the general underlying pathophysiologic problems that occur in traumatically paralyzed subjects who undergo osteoporosis, periarticular bone formation, episodic hypertensive crises, and so forth; (2) mitigation of serious dysfunction by vigorous pharmacologic or surgical intervention to preserve as much sensory and motor function as possible, or both; and (3) the possibility of the elimination of paralysis per se.
