Abstract

Children who are hospitalized on a short-term psychiatric unit usually demonstrate diagnostic and therapeutic problems. Short-term hospitalization of the child serves the purpose of (1) evaluation and diagnosis, (2) short-term treatment and crisis intervention for the child and family, and (3) disposition planning. Evaluation and treatment occur simultaneously and both processes remain ongoing throughout the period of hospitalization.
