Abstract
Day treatment programs for emotionally disturbed children are a relatively recent development in the mental health field. The first North American day program developed within a traditional hospital was established in Montreal by Cameron in 1946. Historically, “psychiatric units in general hospitals were handicapped by three traditional medical characteristics: (a) a hospital is a place to go to bed, (b) a patient stays until he is well, and (c) only the patient is treated” (Glasscote et al., 1969, p. 1). Day programs allow the patient to be treated within the context of the family.
