Abstract

Diabetes is an ailment with such striking and characteristic features, especially when developing in young people, that it is not surprising that it was recognized as a disease entity even in ancient times. Indeed, it has been claimed that the Papyrus Ebers, which dates approximately from 1500 b.c., contains a reference to diabetes mellitus and a prescription for treatment.
