Risk factors for atherosclerosis in diabetes

  • Chapter
Hormones and Atherosclerosis

Abstract

Atherosclerosis occurs more often and at an earlier age in diabetics than in non-diabetics. A possible explanation for this is that risk factors for atherosclerosis in the general population are more common in diabetics. This chapter discusses the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in diabetes and their relationship to atherosclerosis in diabetics. Some characteristics of diabetes itself will also be discussed. Abnormalities of lipid metabolism in diabetes are the subject of another chapter.
