Abstract
Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for atherosclerosis1. Stroke and congestive cardiac failure are the most important complications of raised blood pressure (Table 17.1) but myocardial infarction also has a close association with hypertension. There is good evidence from a number of well-designed trials3,4 that therapeutic reduction of raised blood pressure prevents many of the complications of hypertension (Table 17.2).
