α- and β-Adrenergic Mechanisms in the Control of Sleep Stages

  • Chapter

Abstract

Norepinephrine (NE) appears intimately connected with central nervous mechanisms controlling various aspects of vigilance22, 25, 41, but its explicit role in the mechanisms of paradoxical sleep (PS) has remained elusive and a point of active controversy. To a minor degree the same holds for NE and waking.
