Abstract
A generation ago, it would have been unthinkable to attempt to define schizophrenia in terms of anything other than the somewhat mysterious psychological concepts of the time. This approach, which had little contact with everyday physical experience, produced theoretical constructs that were blinkered by their own limited set of assumptions. The major questions were pre-empted, the arguments circular and, scientifically, no progress was possible.
