Abstract

Many workers have suggested an association between schizophrenia and alcoholism. If this is so, the recognition of chronic excess alcohol intake in both disorders is of obvious diagnostic importance. Annual expenditure on alcoholic beverages in the United Kingdom is in excess of £2000 million, and the equivalent of more than 71 of absolute alcohol is consumed annually per head of population. It has been estimated that more than 2% of the adult population or more than 750, 000 people drink excessively and that more than 1096 of admissions to male medical wards have a drinking problem (Hetzel, 1975; Hore, 1977).
