Abstract

There have been considerable changes in the indications for closed as opposed to open mitral valvotomy in the past 8 or 10 years, due partly to the increasing safety of cardiopulmonary bypass but also to the development of echocardiography which enables the clinician to select suitable cases for the closed procedure.
