Abstract
In November 1944 Dr Alfred Blalock performed his first systemic artery/ pulmonary artery anastomosis (Blalock-Taussig shunt), thereby instigating the palliation of patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease. Since that date, other palliative operations have been suggested and performed for cyanotic congenital heart disease, and more recently there has been a trend towards one-stage total corrective surgery for patients, rather than a two- stage palliative/corrective surgical approach.
