Abstract
Dentists have long recognized the need for the development of special skills. Some ancient civilizations, as far back as the fourth century BC, practised replacement of missing teeth on a very limited scale and by the tenth century AD decayed teeth were being prepared, and filled with resinous materials. During the Middle Ages, the barber-surgeons practised extraction of teeth. By the eighteenth century dentistry had made considerable progress and included the treatment of gum diseases and the correction of irregularities in the position of teeth ; dentures were carved from blocks of ivory, and later the skills of the goldsmith were used in the construction of gold dentures. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, advances have been impressive; techniques were developed for building up restorations in teeth by meticulous condensing of gold foil, for the construction of porcelain fillings and crowns, and for making single and multiple cast gold restorations; all of these demanded a high degree of skill.
