Abstract
Diarrhea and weight loss are frequent manifestations of alcoholism. Alterations in the intestinal absorption of nutrients have long been suspected in alcoholics. The presence of malabsorption was first documented in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis1,2. Impaired fat absorption in these patients was attributed to the chronic hepatic and pancreatic complications of alcoholism rather than to ethanol ingestion itself. It subsequently became apparent3 that malabsorption could also occur in alcoholics without cirrhosis or pancreatitis. In the largest reported series, impairment of intestinal absorption has been found in approximately 50% of hospitalized alcoholics with4–8 and without9–11 cirrhosis.
