Abstract
The data available on unsaturated nitrogen-containing compounds are extremely variable. The position of the C≡N stretching vibration in nitriles has been extensively studied and is clearly defined; the influence of conjugation or of halogen substitution is also known. Similarly, azides can be recognised without undue difficulty. The double-bond vibrations, C=N and N=N, are reasonably well defined. The approximate positions of the absorptions due to each are known, but little is known of factors influencing the position or intensity. In conjugated cyclic compounds the C=N vibration appears to be subject to frequency shifts which are much greater than any shown by the corresponding C=C vibrations, so that considerable caution is required in the interpretation of the spectra of compounds containing such structures.
