Abstract
As we have already seen, ultrastructure proves of comparatively little help in distinguishing between membranes with manifestly different functions. This statement excludes highly specific membranes, such as the purple membrane of the Halobacteria with its array of protein molecules or the disc membranes of retinal-rod outer segments. Otherwise, all the modern techniques of examination, from freezeetching to the examination of simple sections, lead only to the visualization of rather small differences that are often hard to interpret. This similarity in ultrastructure, together with those of composition and properties, has led to a consideration of a general structure for membranes. Such general ideas are quite vital as guidelines to projecting further experimentation and thinking. Nevertheless, their acceptance must not be allowed to prevent us remembering the vast range of detailed differences in function that exist. Indeed, a few general differences such as the absence of sterols from bacteria and their universal presence in membranes from eukaryotes may suggest that the hypothetical general structures are as yet only beginning to embrace the complexities and niceties necessary to explain the functioning of any given membrane.
