Biosynthesis of other bacterial wall components

  • Chapter
Microbial Cell Walls and Membranes

Abstract

The isolation and structure of many teichoic acids has been discussed in detail in Chapter 7.1.1. As described there the teichoic acids were initially thought to be polymers of either polyglycerol or polyribitol phosphate, together with associated sugars and ester-linked D-alanine [7]. However, in recent years the term teichoic acid, in the case of wall-associated material, has come to mean any one of a range of phosphate-containing polymers found covalently linked to peptidoglycan [4, 8]. In contrast, the membrane teichoic acids so far examined have all been found to be polyglycerol phosphates [4, 8]. In this Chapter we will consider the biosynthesis of both wall and membrane teichoic acids and, in the case of the wall polymers, the formation of the linkage to peptidoglycan.
