Abstract
In earth structures engineering, the recognition of potential problems is often a greater challenge than the actual design. Many problems are regional in scope and considerable preliminary work must precede an effective and efficient site investigation. Of fundamental concern are the occurrence and distribution of material types and ground water; the interpretation of air photos can provide preliminary information of this type for problem recognition and site planning purposes. Air photos and infrared scanner images are also used for agriculture, waste disposal, resource development and many other planning activities.
