Abstract
The effect of phenol and phenolic compounds on the gas exchange of autotrophic and heterotrophic plankters was examined with Chlorella pyrenoidosa and with a mixed bacterial population of a local stream. The photosynthetic activity of the green algae is more sensitive than the respiratory activity of the bacteria to Phenol, p-Hydroxybenzaldehyd, p-Hydroxybencoic acid, 2,4-Dichlorophenol and 2,3,4-Trichlorophenol. The depression of activity depended on the concentration of the phenolic substances and on the kind of substituents and their position on the benzene ring. Chlorophenols were more effective than hydroxyl compounds. When chlorophenols were added the electron-microscopial figure of Chlorella showed cytological changes which were characterized by a contraction of the chloroplasts and a disintegration of the thylacoid structure.
