Abstract
Controlled fire is a cheap and effective management tool to prevent devastating forest wildfires: highly flammable fuel on the ground is burnt off under moist, controlled conditions. The „friendly flames“ also carry out seedbed preparation and insect control. Long experience with controlled fire in American forests should stimulate investigations in Germany. Controlled fire is also used for the effectful management of moist monocultures like swamps and marshlands.
