Abstract

The caloric values of plants and animals from a wide range of systematics often show quite a considerable intraspecific variability, both on a dry weight base and on an ash-free dry weight base. In the present paper one insect species and some higher plant species are investigated with regard to the main factors causing these fluctuations of energy content. The data of other authors on similar topics are presented in supplement. The essential reasons for this intraspecific variability of the caloric values are developmental, nutritional, seasonal and sexual differences of the stages involved. Also some climatic factors seem to play an important role for the energetics of some groups of organisms.
