Selective nutritional support for hepatic regeneration: experimental and clinical experiences with branched-chain amino acids

Advances in Clinical Nutrition

Abstract

Hepatic regeneration (HR) is a transient process of the liver which occurs when liver mass is reduced by 10% or more and ceases when the initial liver mass has been restored4. The reserve capacity of this phenomenon is extraordinary since only 5% of the total liver mass (e.g. the caudate lobe) can serve to reconstitute the entire initial liver mass21. The rapidity with which this process occurs, dictates that in the second post-operative week regeneration has assumed such ‘biological priority’ as to eventually assure complete restoration of the resected mass3.
