Abstract
Sir Wilson Jameson, a former Chief Medical Officer and at the time Master of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries, a long-time friend of the first President, William Pickles, played an important part in the preparatory work for the College. At that stage, however, there was little direct contact with the Ministry of Health, predecessor of the Department of Health and Social Security. There were informal contacts on a personal basis with senior medical staff who happened to be on close and friendly terms with the first officers of the College. The main formal contacts of the Department were with the General Medical Services Committee of the British Medical Association on medico-political matters from which the College studiously remained at a distance.
