Antiteratogens as analytical tools

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in the Study of Birth Defects ((ASBD,volume 1))

Abstract

Experimental teratology and its counterpart, the preventive avoidance of misdirected development, grew from quite distinctive roots. One had its origin in frank curiosity, i.e. Virgil’s desire of rerum cognoscere causas; the other found its starting point in the aspiration of correcting defects that had earlier been traced to deficiencies in the feeding of domestic livestock or of laboratory animals, especially of rats. It was during these latter, chiefly practical, inquiries that attention was first called to the possible importance of using the deliberate correction of aberrant developmental steps, i.e. antiteratogenesis, as an experimental tool for understanding the effects of planned intervention in normal morphogenesis.
