Abstract
Coal-fired powerplants are, if no adequate scrubbers are installed, heavy sources of emissions of airborne fly ash and of sulfur and nitrogen oxides. In this context substantially less attention has been paid to the role played by trace elements present in emissions of such powerplants. The trace element content of coal is known to vary with the specific geological conditions of mines (e.g. Kaakinen and Jorden, 1974; Bezacinsky et al., 1984).
