Abstract
A trademark of the research reported from studies where probiotics or direct-fed microbials have been included in cattle rations has been the variability of observed results. Such variability has not only been shown in controlled experiments, but also in commercial settings. This author has known of a number of producers who have used one or more of the probiotics for a period with favourable results and have withdrawn or switched to another probiotic because they. sensed that the initial additive(s) became ineffective. A possible reason for this variability in response is an adaptation to the probiotic by a particular environment of micro-organisms or a shift in feeding or management conditions which might have rendered a fungal or bacterial culture ineffective.
