Abstract

When, in 1906, Reginald Daly completed his monumental task of mapping across the North American Cordillera at the 49th parallel, he had recorded the first detailed account of a cordilleran batholith. It was this experience that led him to propose his law about the association of batholiths with mountain belts, the explanation of which, as we now know, lies in the generation of magmas and new crust at plate margins.
