Abstract
Of all the examples of the association of basic rocks with granites, that of the appinite suite is one of the most revealing in respect to the multifactorial processes at work in igneous rock petrogenesis. The essential coherence of this close-knit rock suite was first recognized in 1916 by Bailey and Maufe in the district of Appin, Argyll, where, as elsewhere in the Scottish and Irish Caledonides, such rocks are intimately associated in time and place with the Late Caledonian plutons.
