Abstract

Geodesy is the determination of the shape of the earth. The subject is complex, and this chapter gives a general understanding combined with many of the basic formulae required for the UTM projection. The shape of the earth is very difficult to map mathematically, so many different models have been created to represent a ‘best fit’ solution. Most of these models use a primitive shape, such as a sphere or ellipsoid to approximate the shape of the earth.
