Abstract

The scleral support procedure (i.e., reinforcement) is an operation performed to stabilize the enlargement of progressive myopic eyes. We investigated visual acuity, refractive error, astigmatism and axial length before surgery and 1 week, and 1, 2, 6 and 10 months post-surgery. At the end of the follow-up average visual acuity was better than before the operation. The refraction was practically unchanged. The astigmatism gradually changed during follow-up and finally approached the preoperative condition. The average axial length was shorter at the end of follow-up than before the operation. Thus the axial shortening may be responsible for the improvement in vision; the astigmatism did not seem to influence the improvement in vision.
