Abstract

We used the Humphrey Ultrasound Biomicroscope (UBM) system 840 to study various disorders of the anterior segment of the eye. Such images could not be obtained with earlier equipment because of poor resolution power. This UBM system, using a 50 MHz probe, has a lateral and axial resolution of about 50 µ, which allows us to visualize disorders still at an early phase. By viewing a part of the anterior segment in cross-sections, one may evaluate, in the presence of opaque media, the relations between the various parts of the anterior segment and determine the correct position of an intraocular lens, the increase of a ciliary body tumor or the evolution of corneal lesions such as Descemet’s membrane detachment. Indeed, thanks to its high resolution power, this equipment allows us to perform very accurate biometries in all these disorders and to measure the angles formed by different structures of the anterior segment, by means of software.
