Abstract

The recently developed nonlinear optical techniques are not only a useful tool for the determination of nonlinear optical susceptibilities describing the material response to the exciting external fields, but also a mean of studying the electronic structure of molecules and/or individual atoms. This is possible because nonlinear optical processes involve interaction of several photons. This interaction passes through virtual states (shown by broken lines in Fig. 1). If one of this virtual states coincides with the excited state of unperturbed system (solid lines in Fig. 1) a resonant enhancement in nonlinear optical susceptibility describing the given process will occur. Such a resonant process will be accompanied by appearance of complex term in the nonlinear optical susceptibility.
